Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket supports families in need with launch of 'Kilo of Kindness' charity drive

Phuket (Thailand), August 22, 2017: Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket is one of 46 Mövenpick properties around the world calling on guests and residents to donate food, clothing and educational supplies to help local families in need as it launches the 2017 'Kilo of Kindness' charity drive.

The global campaign, which marks the UN International Day of Charity on 5 September, will see donated items distributed to disadvantaged local communities by each hotel's charity partner.

Big-hearted guests and visitors are invited to drop off at least one kilo of food, clothing and educational supplies in the hotel lobby during the two-week campaign, which runs from 1-15 September. They will be donated to Baan Lung Pitak foundation, which takes care of children whose parents have been sent to jail for a period of time, as well as to SOS Children's Village Phuket, which provide shelter and educational support to young orphans in Phuket.

SOS Children's Village Phuket was set up in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. At the time, SOS Children's Villages immediately provided emergency relief and took care of unaccompanied children. Children whose relatives could not take them in have now found a new home in one of the SOS families.

Last year, 926 kilos of supplies were donated to 12 participating hotels - a figure Mövenpick hopes to surpass with this year's expanded campaign. While each guest is encouraged to donate a 'Kilo of Kindness', all contributions will be gratefully received.

Educational supplies in demand include books, notebooks and stationery such as pens, pencils, rulers, erasers, sharpeners, glue and scissors. Clothing donations will be well received too, as well as canned and dried (unperishable) foods such as rice, beans, oats, pasta, cereals, flour and powdered milk.

The 'Kilo of Kindness' campaign is part of 'Shine', Mövenpick's global corporate social responsibility programme. Shine's initiatives are grouped around three pillars - Environment, Employer and Social Sustainability - with Education the common focus.
