Phuket, Thailand - The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta under Royal Patronage has won the prestigious 2016 Asia Boating Awards – Best Asian Regatta. The award recognizes the extraordinary efforts of the organizers of Asia’s premier regatta this past year, in terms of its exceptional organization, promotion, course quality, entry size, competitiveness and social aspects. It is the third time the Phuket King's Cup Regatta has won this highly coveted award.

Created by Asia-Pacific Boating and China Boating magazines in 2005, the annual Asia Boating Awards recognizes the best stakeholders of the maritime industry in Asia and internationally for their quality products and services. Presented during a spectacular ceremony held during the Singapore Yacht Show, the awards serve as a benchmark for the industry in the Asia-Pacific region.

“We are very pleased to have received this award from such a prestigious organization,” said Simon James, Race Director of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta. “The commitment of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta's supporters, participants, media and sponsors really show as the event keeps growing year after year for almost three decades. We were pleased to have had a record year last year of 168 boats and we fully expect this year’s 30th Anniversary (to be organized from 3-10 December, 2016) will be another phenomenal year."

Consisting of five days of racing on scenic courses amidst the beautiful Andaman Sea islands, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta draws sailors and support crews from over 40 countries worldwide. Sailing in Thailand also enjoys a great boost from the regatta as young Thai sailors are able to develop their sailing skills, and go on to join international keelboat crews competing for class honors.

As well as bringing some of the world’s fastest independent racing teams, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is famed for its beachside party series. The regatta offers sponsorship and media engagement opportunities as well as premier networking opportunities hosted across the party venues each night following conclusion of the day’s racing.

Under Royal Patronage, the Phuket King's Cup Regatta is organized by the Phuket King's Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket. The region’s largest regatta includes dinghies (International Dinghy Classes), keelboats and multihulls amongst its competitive classes, and will feature a sail pass to celebrate His Majesty the King's birthday.

Inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand, the most prestigious sailing event in Asia has been held every year since, during the first week of December.
