Getting around Phuket works best when transport matches the journey: a car service for a direct trip, a bus where its route and timetable fit, and a hired driver for several stops. Walking depends on the exact location. Vehicle hire requires the right driving documents, insurance and experience.
Last checked: 19 October 2026. Recheck fares, timetables and pickup instructions before travelling.
Start with the journey, then choose the vehicle
Phuket’s airport is in the north, its beaches are spread around the coast, and Old Town is inland. A short line on a map can conceal a hillside road or a journey across the island.
- One direct trip: compare an app car, a taxi quote and any accommodation transfer on the same passenger and luggage requirements.
- A journey along a bus route: check both directions, the stop and the last return before paying for a private vehicle.
- Several stops in one day: compare a driver’s complete itinerary quote with separate journeys, including the return.
- App car: useful for a specified pickup and destination; availability, vehicle type and meeting point need checking.
- Taxi or tuk-tuk: useful when a suitable vehicle is available locally; establish whether the fare is metered or agreed.
- Public bus: a published per-person fare; allow for the timetable and the journey between the stop and the final address.
- Rental car: independent travel for a suitable driver; add parking, fuel, insurance terms and the rental return to the plan.
Taxis and tuk-tuks: agree what the price covers
Before setting off, establish whether the ride uses a meter or an agreed fare. For a metered taxi, ask about any separate booking or airport charge. For an agreed fare, confirm the total in THB for the vehicle and everyone travelling, rather than leaving the price basis unclear.
Give the actual destination or entrance, not only the beach area. Ask whether extra stops, waiting and a return trip are included. A lift to a viewpoint or a beach does not itself arrange the journey back.
A hired driver for a day with several stops
For a day combining temples, viewpoints and Phuket Old Town, send the proposed stops before requesting a quote. Agree the start and finish, included hours, waiting arrangements and additional-hour rate.
Confirm fuel, parking, passenger and luggage capacity, cancellation terms and the return address in writing. Compare the same itinerary across quotes. A day rate is only useful when its inclusions match the day being planned.
Grab and Bolt: check the service and the pickup
Grab and Bolt provide car bookings in Phuket. Enter the destination, check the pickup pin, choose a suitable vehicle and review the price basis and payment method before confirming. Compare the same trip and vehicle capacity; neither app is always the cheaper choice.
Grab’s guidance distinguishes upfront fares from GrabTaxi. Do not assume every category uses the same charging method. Check the cash or in-app payment option actually selected for the booking.
At a hotel, confirm which entrance the driver can use. Read the driver’s message, match the registration and vehicle details, and resolve a misplaced pin before boarding. Availability and pickup access are not guaranteed at every address. A motorcycle service, where offered, is a different choice from a car and does not provide the same space or protection.
Buses can work when the route fits
Phuket Smart Bus publishes three services: Airport–Rawai via the west coast, Phuket Town–Patong, and the Dragon Line city shuttle. The airport route serves Surin, Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata on the way south.
Published single fares checked on 19 October 2026 are THB 100 for the Airport–Rawai route, THB 50 for the Town–Patong service and free for the Dragon Line. These are per-person bus fares. The operator lists cash, contactless Visa, Mastercard and JCB, and QR payment through Thai banking apps.
Use the operator’s timetable and fare and payment page for the chosen route. Check direction, boarding stop and last return; the nearest stop may still leave a separate journey to the hotel.
Airport Bus 8411, local buses and songthaews
Airport Bus 8411 links the airport with Bus Terminal 1 in Phuket Town. It is a separate service from the west-coast Smart Bus. Its published airport–terminal fare is THB 100 per person; shorter sections have their own fares. AOT lists cash and QR payment on board.
For other local buses or songthaews, confirm the particular service, route, fare and last departure before boarding. Do not assume a familiar vehicle colour or an old route map establishes the current service. The Phuket Bus app provides route, stop, arrival and fare information.
Check a direct connection for the actual beach pair or town journey. Include any change of bus and the return; a network map does not establish a convenient connection at the time needed.
Car hire: documents first, then the daily plan
A car can suit repeated outings from a spread-out base, but compare the complete rental cost with the journeys actually planned. Check parking at the accommodation and destinations, luggage space, fuel policy and the collection and return arrangements.
Thai government guidance identifies valid Thai licences, International Driving Permits and licences from ASEAN member countries as recognised routes to driving eligibility. The required documents depend on the licence held and vehicle category. Arrange the appropriate permit before travelling and carry it with the underlying licence where required.
Confirm the requirements for the specific licence with its issuing authority and the Thai authorities. Separately check the rental contract, permitted drivers, deposit, excess and insurance exclusions. Photograph the vehicle at collection. A rental company handing over keys does not establish legal entitlement or insurance cover.
Scooter hire requires motorcycle entitlement
Do not rent a scooter without motorcycle entitlement valid in Thailand, suitable experience and insurance that covers the intended riding. Check any engine-size restrictions and passenger cover with the insurer. Being allowed to ride a small scooter at home does not establish permission for the vehicle offered in Phuket.
Both rider and passenger need a properly fastened helmet. Phuket is not a place to learn in holiday traffic. Choose a car service when riding experience or documents are insufficient, and use the Is Phuket Safe? guide for wider travel-safety preparation.
Walking depends on the route outside the gate
Old Town’s adjoining streets and parts of the beach towns allow local outings on foot. Check the actual route before relying on walking for meals, a beach visit or a bus stop. Steps, gradients, crossings, interrupted pavements and the return after dark can change the decision.
A map pin or straight-line distance does not establish a usable pavement. Ask the accommodation for photographs of its entrance and the route, particularly with a pushchair or mobility aid. In Bang Tao and Laguna, check the specific beach access and restaurant destination rather than treating the whole district as one walking area.
The Where to Stay in Phuket guide helps compare bases before these daily journeys become part of the budget.
Airport journeys: settle the meeting arrangements
Compare airport counter services, a metered taxi, an app car, a pre-booked transfer and the appropriate bus route. With a transfer, confirm the terminal, meeting point, included waiting time, flight-delay policy and contact number. Pre-booking can simplify the arrangements; it does not by itself prove a service is safer.
For an app collection, follow the current booking instructions, terminal signs and authorised pickup arrangement. Keep terminal-by-terminal instructions in the Phuket Airport Guide. For departure, plan backwards from the airline’s required arrival time and allow for collection, traffic and any car return.
Families, luggage and mobility needs
Children and bulky luggageGive children’s ages and request the required seat in advance. Confirm its type and availability, plus space for every suitcase and pushchair. Passenger capacity does not establish luggage capacity.
Mobility and boardingConfirm steps, seat height, assistance and equipment dimensions directly. Explain whether a wheelchair folds and whether the passenger can transfer to a seat. Do not assume a standard taxi, van or bus meets a particular access need.
Compare the whole journey and leave room for traffic
Compare a whole-car quote with the total bus cost for the group, including any ride between a stop and the final address. For an outing, count both directions and any waiting. For a rental, include fuel, parking and contractual charges rather than comparing only the daily headline price.
Use a current map estimate as a planning aid, then allow for the pickup and the deadline at the other end. A map estimate is not a promised arrival time. For a flight, boat departure or fixed appointment, settle the transport plan in advance and keep the operator’s contact details available offline.
Before travelling: six checks
- Confirm the exact destination, entrance and pickup point, including the correct terminal or pier.
- Check whether the price is metered, an app quote, an agreed vehicle total or a per-person ticket.
- Confirm passengers, bags, child seats, boarding needs and space for mobility equipment.
- Plan the return and check waiting arrangements or the last bus in the correct direction.
- For vehicle hire, check driving entitlement, insurance and the rental terms before accepting the keys.
- Allow time for collection and traffic; save the booking, address and contact details offline.
